California is known as a part of the U.S. that produces some of the best wines in the world – many of them having their birthplace in the Napa Valley. The most well-known varieties are based on the fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that grow in the Valley. However, California also has another place where world-beating wines are produced this is Sonoma County – the focus here is on Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. In fact, so well regarded is this region that many wine experts believe that the Pinot Noirs from Sonoma’s Russian River Valley are among the best in the world. However, the County is the source of many other types of wine as well.

Wine from Sonoma County, especially those from the Russian Valley region boast complexity and richness, as well as a voluptuousness, that makes them world-beaters. That depth of flavor is balanced by a subtle elegance that makes them immensely popular with those who appreciate the finest of wines. that is not to say that there are not other regions of Sonoma County that do not deliver on quality. The Sonoma Coast, for example, produces some noteworthy bottles of delight.

It is with Zinfandel that the true beauty and depth of flavor of wine from Sonoma County reaches its full potential. Experts agree that the Zinfandel’s (red and pink) that have their origins in Sonoma are among the best in the world. It is, without doubt, the premier region for the production of that wine varietal (the Dry Creek Valley is where some of the best bottles are produced).

Sonoma County is extensive. It dwarf’s the Napa Valley – and for this reason, there are a number of climatic conditions can be found across the Couty. For this reason, the climatic conditions can vary wildly. The fact that there are coastal regions – as well as interior environments means that the wines can vary wildly in taste. For instance, there is the Alexander Valley and the mountains in the area that are both warm and dry – which makes them ideal for the growing of magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Places such as the Russian River Valley, the Green Valley and Forestville are cooler – making the ideal base for the production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling, effervescent wines. They are also places in the County that could be characterized as ‘temperate’. Here, wines such as Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc rule the roost.

Given these enormously varied climatic conditions, it is no surprise to learn that Sonoma County almost literally has something that will greet with joy by almost any wine lover. For those who want to visit the County, there are some wineries that will reward closer inspection. These include the fabulous Donum Estate where one can sample art and great Pinotat at the same time. For something a little different head to Scribe Winery. There’s no tasting room, guests are invited to take a blanket (supplied) and find a sheltering tree or inviting patch of grass to enjoy some homegrown fruit or nuts – and sample some exceptional vintages.

Sonoma County is one of those places that will reward diligent exploration – set aside some time to enjoy its beauty – and the fruit of its varied vines.
