Nobody wants to get into a truck accident. After all, that is why they are called “accidents.” However, when a collision occurs it is very important to handle things correctly so that everyone involved stays safe physically as well as legally. Even so, it can be a very terrifying situation that leaves each party involved in the collision unsure of what to do next. So what should you do after a truck accident?
1. Stop the Truck and Report the Collision
After the crash occurs, it’s important to remove the truck from the road if this is possible. Keep in mind that it is imperative to remain at the scene of the accident until the report has been made and you are given the all-clear to leave. Make sure that everyone involved is safe. Turn on your hazard lights, which is especially needed if the accident happened during the night. This will ensure that other travelers see you and do not collide with your pulled over vehicle.
If there has been an injury or death, call 911 immediately. Otherwise, alert the police or even the state highway patrol, depending on where the collision occurred. When the officer arrives, he or she will consider the situation and work with you to fill out an accident report. Be sure to request a copy for your records.
2. Identify the Other Party
You will want to identify the other individuals involved in the accident, especially if he or she is at fault. Keep a record of the other vehicle, especially any identifying marks or whether or not it was a work vehicle. The company owning the vehicle, in that instance, could be the party responsible for your injuries or damages.
3. Exchange Information and Look for Witnesses
Nobody wants issues when it comes to legality after a truck accident, but you still want to make sure that your bases are covered just in case. Therefore, exchange information with the other party involved in the collision and make note of any witnesses who saw what happened that led to the crash. You can take a witness statement if he or she is willing to give you one, or simply take down their contact information in case they are needed at a future date. When it comes to getting and giving information with the individual(s) directly involved in the crash, it is important to exchange:
– Name and contact of the truck driver’s employer (if applicable)
– The driver’s information (name, address, phone number, etc.)
– The driver’s insurance company and policy
– The license plate number and vehicle information of the other car involved
You may know immediately that you have been injured. But even if you feel okay after an accident, it is important to get checked out to ensure that there are no problems that are not yet detectable by yourself.
After an accident, especially one that involved a truck, it is important to handle things correctly so that all parties involved can smoothly get repairs and injuries handled and get back on the road safely in the future.
